Trentham Cub Pack

 What is Cubs ?

A Cub is a young boy or girl aged between 8 and 10½ years.

There are loads of fun things that you can do as a Cub Scout. You will get a chance to try lots of different activities like swimming, music, exploring, computing and collecting. If you do them properly you will get a badge which you can wear on your uniform.

Cub Scouts also get to go on trips and days out, to places like the zoo, theme parks or a farm. Sometimes you will be able to go camping with the rest of your Pack. This will mean you sleeping in a tent and doing loads of outdoor activities.

Activities 2006

We did several fun activities during 2006. See below for a few details and click here to see more photos

Links with New Zealand

Whilst looking for ideas for pack nights with a "Global" theme we came across a town in New Zealand called Trentham. A few emails later we were introduced to the Leader of Heretaunga Cub Scout Group which is situated in the suburb of Trentham, Upper Hutt.

The Scouts in Trentham, New Zealand, collected together photos, leaflets, newspapers, magazines and Scouting items which they thought were specific to our local area. These were sent to us and used for our New Zealand night. We have now put everything on display at the Scout House

Our Scouts were asked to bring in similar photos, leaflets, newspapers, magazines and letters which they thought were specific to Trentham, England and the surrounding area of Stoke on Trent. All the information collected was sent to Heretaunga group where they will hold activities based on an England theme. We held a New Zealand night which included making Hokey Pokeys, learning about the cultures of New Zealand and a quiz. The opening ceremony was performed as done in NZ and the first game was chair football (a favourite in NZ)

Fire Safety Night

As part of their Caring Challenge the Cubs took part in a Fire Safety Night which included a games, quiz and a talk from a Fire Fighter

Beetle Drive Night

As part of their Caring Challenge the Cubs hosted a Beetle Drive evening which attracted over 60 people and raised £52 for the local Donna Louise Trust

Making Bird Boxes

We were contacted by a neighbour who had been watching Bill Oddie's programme on the BBC. She told us it would be nice if we could put some bird boxes up in the grounds. Rather than buying some boxes the Cubs have made some on a pack night. Two boxes have been put up at the Scout House and the remainder were taken to Trentham Gardens and put up in the woodland.

  Camping

We tried out our new tents at Kibblestone and did abseiling and rock climbing

Useful Information

The Cub Scout Promise
I promise that I will do my best
To do my duty to God and to The Queen,
To help other people
And to keep the Cub Scout Law.

The Cub Scout Law
Cub Scouts always do their best,
Think of others before themselves
And do a good turn every day.

The Cub Scout Motto
Be Prepared

The Cub Scout programme still uses the Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book stories as a basis, each new Cub finding out about the story of Mowgli's entry into the Pack. The programme starts on a trail to learning all the Scouting skills needed later in the Scout Troop, giving a taste of the game of Scouting and teaching how to be part of a co-operative team, the Pack. As well as the adventure the fun element of the Jungle Book character's are used, the Pack leader being Akela, and other assistants Rama, Kaa, Baloo and Bagheera.

Uniform
Cub Scouts wear a common uniform, to create a sense of belonging and encourage a feeling of pride and of being part of a worldwide movement. The uniform consists of a green sweatshirt, group neckerchief (scarf) and woggle. The neckerchief and woggle. along with the first badges are presented to the Cub during investiture.
